Energy solutions company Rentech is highlighting the long-term financial and operational benefits of solar energy for the agricultural sector, despite persistent concerns among some farmers about upfront costs and system viability.

Speaking to Engineering News at Nampo Harvest Day 2026, Rentech business manager Jaco Weideman said rising electricity tariffs were improving the business case for solar installations, enabling farmers to generate savings that could be reinvested into their operations.

He noted that the viability of large-scale solar systems depended largely on correct engineering and system design, with installations tailored to the specific energy consumption patterns of each farming operation.

Weideman said solar should be viewed as a long-term strategic investment that can improve return on investment and strengthen operational sustainability over time.

He added that farmers selecting a solar provider should prioritise long-term support and after-sales service, rather than focusing solely on installation.

Rentech provides engineering, procurement and construction services for energy projects, including system design, equipment sourcing, installation, commissioning, power audits and ongoing maintenance support. The company also assists clients with regulatory compliance and electrical certification requirements.
